Chiang khan

Chiang Khan is a small district of leoy province. It is an ancient city that still keep its identities for more than hundred years ago.The town called Chiang Khan is located 150 kilometers west of Nongkhai. Chiang Khan is located on the Mekong river and is far from tourist popular destinations.Tucked behind the Mekong River north of Loei and west of Nong Khai, Chiang Khan is not to be missed. It offers the same beautiful scenery and slow afternoons as other border towns, but steps it up a notch with relative seclusion and spectacular guesthouses. Life remains fairly slow and isolated here along the meandering Mekong. With a soothing atmosphere and few sights to distract you, you’re free to kick back, enjoy the cultural enrichment, and rejuvenate.

Chiang khan is similar to Pai in Maehongsorn.you will enjoy seeing old thai lifestyle and also old thai cultures which is difficult to see in nowadays. They also provide beautiful photo-taking places for you.You will touch good atmosphere and back to the old age of Thailand. If you want to escape from any confusion in the towns, you should spend your holidays relaxing in Chiang khan. You will be fascinated to Chiang Khan :)

Wat Rong Khun

The city of Chiang Rai in northernmost Thailand is one of the remaining areas where traditional Thai art and culture flourish. Located near the city of Chiang Rai, about 5 kilometers to the south, is the beautiful Wat Rong Khun or White Temple. The White Temple of Northern Thailand has become a national landmark and, as one of the most recognizable temples in the country, attracts an increasingly large number of visitors every year.

This trip is not my first time visiting the White Temple but its striking white radiance always brings an overwhelming feeling to me once I arrive and step out of the vehicle.

Wat Rong Khun is unique from other temples in that it has been constructed entirely in a radiant white color with sparking reflections from mirrored glass mosaics embedded in the white plaster. The temple is the idea of Mr. Chalermchai Kositpipat, one of Thailand’s most renowned artists, who wanted to build a temple all in white to signify the purity of Lord Buddha. The artist continues to puts his religious belief and desire to enrich Buddhism in Thailand into his contemporary art design. The construction of the White Temple is Khun Chalemchai’s master work, which he refers to as an offering to Lord Buddha and his beloved country.

To approach the main entrance to the main chapel, I assume must signify a kind of passage to enlightenment because this is how I feel approaching the temple. The passage is flanked by two tremendous man-like giants who somehow frighten me until I have to lower my eyes. But this doesn’t help me at all, as those grasping hands near the floor shake my nerves again. The hands are in assorted array, outstretched and seem to be pleading. I realize that this piece of art must symbolize hell and how people in hell will suffer from their bad karma.

While climbing the bridge to the main hall, I notice that I am surrounded by a huge pond containing white fishes and fountains that spout up every now and then. The pond, to me, perhaps signifies the river – Si Tarndon – that divides the mundane world from heaven. As I get closer to the main building I think that this must be a representation of heaven.

Before the main chapel and at the end of the bridge there are several sculptures of meditating Buddha sitting in a lotus circled by spirits of the world. The outer-decoration of the temple hall is all white color representing purity and wisdom of Lord Buddha, however, a dramatic contrast of color is found when arriving inside the main hall. I feel a sense of serenity when looking at a several Buddha altars set inside golden flame.

What surprises the most is how the walls are painted with a colorful larger than life story related to Buddhist and teaching in a very modern and contemporary style. The artist uses icons from modern culture and through space ships, super man, and even Neo from the Matrix movie he tells of the story of Buddha in this very unique display. On the left of the temple’s compound is a golden toilet which Chalermchai seems to also use to transfer some hidden message to visitors. It is as though he is saying, “I want this golden toilet to be a symbol of the human response to imagery.” I am one of the many who paused to consider what may be the artist’s message. Perhaps the message is also that there is beauty in all things, just like this golden toilet which impresses people by its beauty rather than the fact that it is just a toilet.

Chalermchai wishes Wat Rong Khun to become a learning and meditation centre for people to practice dharma and gain benefit from the teachings of Lord Buddha.

Wat Rong Khun is still a work in progress and will be for years to come. It is planned to comprise nine buildings including the ubosot (chapel), pagoda, hermitage, crematorium, monastery hall, preaching hall, museum, pavilion, and rest room facilities which will be built on an area of 7 rai (about 3 acres).

In my opinion, wat rong khun has beautiful design that attracting me a lot. It's shown about another format of thai temple.it has not just buddha statue, but it has  shown about heaven and hell to aware people in nowadays.A.Chalermchai has made it out into wonderful and interesting sculpture that made Wat rong khun is the most wonderful temple of thailand and it can attract people in thailand and foriegners also.  :)

KhunKorn Waterfall

Khun Korn Waterfall is around 30 kilometres outside Chiang Rai city, depending on which route you take. The easiest is to just head south out of town to the White Tempe (AKA Wat Rong Khun) and turn right onto route 1208. From here the waterfall is signposted in English and it's not hard to find. The drive takes about 30-45 minutes.

From the small car parking area, the falls are a 1,400 metre hike through the mountains along a well defined pathway. You'll need to be fit but you certainly won't need any special gear to get there. Actually, the walk through the tropical forest is as much of a pleasure as seeing the waterfall itself. Huge bamboo forests, butterflies, flowers... the walk really is a delight.

This waterfall is by far the highest in Chiang Rai (and most well known) at 70 metres height and when you emerge from the trees to see the actual fall, it's quite impressive. Bathing is allowed and you should expect to get wet, as the fall creates a lot of spray.

If you turn up at the weekend, you may be disappointed to find quite a few people here. It's also unfortunate that not everyone is responsible enough to take their rubbish home with them and when we last visited, there was a pile of plastic bottles and polystyrene trays waiting to be collected. Having said that, a lot of people visit here on Sundays and some evidence of human presence is bound to be left behind.

Hint: Go on a weekday, or early in the morning to have the place to yourself.

There are so many waterfalls in thiland and I think Khunkorn waterfall is another one of intresting tourist attractions. You can get full of natural atmostpherer from Khunkorn waterfall. There are plenty of trees along the path.So you will feel fresh when you were walking through the way.I am sure that if you have a chance to go to Khunkorn waterfall just once, you will never forget it. I recomend. :)

Phu Chee Fah ~ :)

The stunning viewpoint of Phu Chee Fah has been long popular with Thai tourists, but remains little known amongst western travellers. On a clear morning, the views out and over a vast stretch of mist swathed Laos, are absolutely breathtaking.

Set in a remote part of the Thai-Lao border in eastern Chiang Rai province, the view from the summit of 1,628m stretches over a vast stretch of Sainyabuli province in Laos. The view is best at dawn on a clear day, when the valley below fills with mist -- November to February is considered the best time of the year to visit.

There are a bunch of guesthouses and camping is also available, but the difficult part is getting here -- you really need your own transport -- either motorbike or car -- to reach Phu Chee Fah.

Phu Chee Fah can be approached from Wiang Kaen in the north or Thoeng in the south, with the latter being the more popular route taken.

If you choose to approach from Wiang Kaen, expect some stunning mountain scenery and some moderately challenging road conditions. Also, if you choose this route, the more northern viewpoint of Doi Patang is also worth visiting.

If travelling by motorcycle, you're best to do this route with others as if you have a problem with your bike you could be stranded for a long time -- very little traffic uses this road -- though it is about 95% sealed.

There are three areas around Phu Chee Fah with guesthouses, one about 2km north of the final turnoff to the summit a second solitary guesthouse about 1.5km north of the turnoff and the other about 500m south of the final turnoff.

On weekends most places are open, but midweek, many are closed and food opportunities may be limited. From the turn-off it is another km to the parking area, then a 700m hike to the summit.

You can reach Phu Chee Fah by motorbike from either Chiang Rai or Chiang Khong, with both trips taking around 3-4 hours. For those with their own transport, an overnight visit to Phu Chee Fah is highly recommended

~~WoW!!!!!!!!! What a Beautiful!!!!!!!  I think Phu chee fah is a must see place. It's so wonderful.Imagine about a cup of warm coffee in the morning and take a look at the sunrise which is among the fog. How great it is!!!It's much better if you have someone by your side. hahaha. Some day if i have a chance i will go there for sure.  :)
